Meshantan: From Almost Hero To Below Zero

As a responsible parent, I help my daughter with her homework every week. A few weeks ago she had a technology assignment; the topic was cyber-bullying. The worldwide spread of new technology comes with many advantages, but it also brings with it some disadvantages. One of the disadvantages can be seen in the unfortunate event that occured recently to a well-known social media influencer and entertainer, Meshantan Naidoo. 

 I came to know about Meshantan "Straight Choons" Naidoo at the beginning of the South African Nationwide Lockdown which was scheduled to remain in effect for 21 days only. He was live on facebook sending a message to his followers about the importance of following the lockdown rules and warning them about the dangers of the coronavirus. This was a great thing to do. He emphasised the point of social distancing. Even though he was using vulgar language, I still think his message was clear and his great personality and sense of humour made people deaf to his vulgar speech.

I have been following Meshantan since then because he has an interestingly different way of looking at life. But recently he is a target to many online communities because of the scandal that revolves around him. It all started when he voiced out his view on some crime that had taken place. And now it seems his online popularity has increased in a dangerously short amount of time and for the wrong reasons.  He is the new "bad guy" on the block. Now back to my daughter's technology assignment; his story would have been a very good example of the disadvantages of technology, cyber-bullying.
